Across the dry skin spectrum in patients of all ages, from mild itchiness to eczema or psoriasis, our dermatologist-guided research demonstrates that Kenvue products — powered by colloidal oats — satisfy HCP requests for moisturizers that are proven by science to soothe skin, strengthen the skin’s barrier against environmental stressors, balance the skin’s microbiome, and significantly improve consumer quality of life.

In six new studies being presented at AAD, Kenvue investigators found that oat-containing moisturizers developed by Aveeno® and Neutrogena® scientists made the skin’s microbiome more resilient in varying populations. These include young children predisposed to eczema, women with dry skin, adults with mild to moderate eczema, and adults receiving immunobiological treatment for psoriasis.

Across these studies, findings showed that consumers enjoyed improved quality of life while using the moisturizing formulations — and, in many cases, for days afterwards or even longer. Specifically, product users experienced less itchiness, scaliness, and self-consciousness about their appearance — or, in the case of the infants, improvements to the skin’s microbiome associated with a decreased risk of eczema.

Research on Colloidal Oats as a Topical Ingredient to Prevent and Treat Dry, Itchy Skin Infant Skin Microbiome is Associated with Decreased Risk of Atopic Dermatitis and Affected by Early Use of an Emollient

  • Insel RA, et al. The children of parents with allergic disease may have an increased likelihood of developing atopic dermatitis, also known as eczema. To explore a potential prevention strategy, investigators recommended the twice daily application of an oat- and glycerin-containing emollient to children in this population from birth through the age of 8 weeks. Compared with a control group, DNA sequencing of skin microbiome samples collected from the cheeks and elbows showed that children treated with the emollient from birth to 2 months enjoyed lasting effects, with greater abundance of skin-health associated microflora and a lower risk of developing eczema at ages 6 and 12 months.

2-Week Application of Topical Colloidal Oatmeal Gel Cream Supports the Growth of Skin Commensal Staphylococcus Epidermidis in Subjects with Mild-to-Moderate Atopic Dermatitis

  • Comito N, et al. A 2% colloidal oatmeal gel cream has been found to ease eczema, and researchers sought to confirm exactly how the treatment reverses this chronic dryness. In adults with mild to moderate eczema who used the cream on dry skin twice daily for two weeks, microbiome testing showed an increase in the presence of Staphylococcus epidermidis, an organism associated with healthy skin.

Adherence to Continuous Use of an Oat Containing Moisturizer Increases Well-Being of Patients with Psoriasis Undergoing Immunobiological Therapy

  • Renno I, et al. Psoriasis can impact patients’ quality of life due to itchy skin lesions and self-consciousness about appearance. But in this large study of patients receiving an immunobiological treatment for the chronic condition, most reported that concomitant self-care with an oat-containing moisturizer contributed to their well-being and improved their complexion. These results satisfied HCP requests for evidence demonstrating the efficacy of such a moisturizer in this population of patients.

An Oat-Containing Cream Designed to Boost Loricrin, Claudin 1 and Improve Skin Barrier: Observation from In Vitro and Clinical Studies

  • Wang Q, et al. To confirm preclinical findings that an oat-containing cream improved skin barrier function, the authors tested the formula in women with dry skin. Four weeks after baseline, they found that participants had significantly higher levels of the proteins that regulate overall skin condition, skin moisture, and transdermal water loss. Furthermore, after study treatment was stopped, skin improvements were maintained for at least three days.

Benefits of a Colloidal Oatmeal Cream with Biomimetic Lipid Combination and Beta Glucan Active in Atopic Dermatitis in Brazilian Multi-Ethnic Patients: Instrumental, Clinical, Microbiome, Images, and Patient-Perception

  • Renno I, et al. This study shows that an oat-based “recovering cream” was consistently ranked effective and well tolerated in a diverse population of patients with eczema according to a wide range of investigative instruments, supporting the importance of moisturization. Improvements associated with use of the cream included more thorough skin hydration, a reduction in the presence of the unhealthy bacteria Staphylococcus Aureus, less discomfort, and a better quality of life. Those outcomes were confirmed via Scoring Atopic Dermatitis (SCORAD), the Patient Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM), instrumental measurements, images, skin microbiome analysis, and patient self-assessment.

A Cooling Gel Cream with Oat Provides Improvement in Quality of Life for Everyday Lifestyle Impact, and Itch Frequency & Bother, in Atopic Dermatitis Patients

  • Draelos ZD, et al. With prior research supporting the clinical benefits of a 2% oat-containing cooling gel cream for people with eczema, investigators wanted to learn more about the formula’s contributions to quality of life. After using the cream for two weeks, more patients classified their itchiness as infrequent and minimally bothersome than at the study’s start. Participants also said they felt better prepared to manage their eczema and that they appreciated the cooling relief provided by the gel.

Research on Hydrating Skin with a Lightweight Cream that Contains Natural Moisturizing Factor and Epidermal Lipids. Novel Natural Moisturizing Factor and Lipid-Containing Face Cream Induces Aquaporin-3 and Filaggrin Expression Associated with Barrier Improvements and Sustained Clinical Hydration in Extra-Dry Skin

  • Bernhardt KT, et al. Beautifully hydrated skin is a common goal, especially for those concerned about the effects of environmental aggressors and harsh cleansers. Yet, it’s difficult to establish customer compliance with lightweight creams that don’t last or topicals whose occlusives leave heavy residues.
  • In a series of preclinical and clinical studies exploring the treatment of extra-dry skin, researchers found that an expertly formulated cream that was lightweight but enriched with Natural Moisturizing Factor and epidermal lipids not only promoted compliance but was therapeutic in both maintaining the moisture barrier and improving its health and function. Ultimately, the use of this formulation resulted in sustained hydration, even after cleansing.

Research on the Benefits of Mineral Sunscreen with Zinc Oxide to Boost Protection Against the Sun’s Harmful Rays. Demonstrating the Clinical Effectiveness of Mineral Sunscreens in Protecting the Skin Against Ultraviolet A (UVA) Radiation-Induced Pigmentation

  • Shyr TC, et al. Sun Protection Factor (SPF) is widely recognized as an index of protection against Ultraviolet B (UVB) light, but SPF ratings do not specify how fully a product protects against Ultraviolet A (UVA) light, which penetrates the skin more deeply and causes pigmentary, photoaging, photocarcinogenic, and immunomodulatory effects. Sunscreens that contain minerals, especially zinc oxide, are known to provide UVA protection, but its clinical relevance in terms of UVA-induced pigmentation has not been fully clarified.
  • To learn more, researchers compared the effectiveness of eight broad-spectrum mineral sunscreens made with or without zinc oxide. After applying the sunscreens to participants’ skin, they captured images of the pigmentation that occurred with exposure to UVA light. The team found that sunscreens with zinc oxide provided better protection against UVA light than those with no zinc oxide.

Research on Hydrocolloid Patches as a Fast-Acting Treatment for Acne. The Science Behind a Viral Trend: Demonstrating Tolerance and Efficacy of Hydrocolloid Patch for Facial Acne

  • Kosmoski G, et al. People with acne often become frustrated and noncompliant when using traditional over-the-counter and prescription acne treatments, as these solutions can take a long time to become effective. Consumers looking for an overnight response have been gravitating toward over-the-counter hydrocolloid patches, but HCPs have called for data confirming their effectiveness. Researchers responded by conducting a randomized trial of the Neutrogena® Stubborn Acne Hydrocolloid Patch in people with mild to moderate acne.
  • The research team found that those who used the patches perceived a noticeable reduction in the size, texture, and redness of both closed and popped pimples within a day compared with those who did not use the patches. They concluded that these non-medicated patches are an effective option for overnight improvements to acne.
