Dabao1, a Kenvue Skin Health & Beauty brand, and the School of Life Sciences at Peking University in China, have officially inaugurated their joint laboratory on the university’s campus — signaling the start of a pioneering long-term academic partnership.
With Dabao’s support, the joint laboratory will focus on exploring the correlation between mitochondrial function and cell aging, as well as the possibility of applying the findings to skincare. The aim is to seek new targets that improve mitochondrial function in skin cells among Chinese population, providing the foundation for more precise research, development, and ultimately innovation of cutting-edge skincare products.
Mitochondria, which are crucial organelles found in most eukaryotic cells (including human cells), are central to aerobic respiration and energy production. Additionally, mitochondria are involved in cell differentiation, signaling, apoptosis, and the regulation of cell growth and the cell cycle.
“By establishing a joint laboratory with Dabao, we will leverage Peking University’s research models, capabilities, and achievements in mitochondrial studies to support Dabao in the field of skin health, bringing new perspectives to the development of skin cell science,” Professor Li Chenjian of the School of Life Sciences at Peking University said. " We look forward to further broadening the current mitochondrial research perspective with Dabao’s support, bringing more holistic and diversified skincare solutions to public through our collaboration.”
“The establishment of this joint laboratory with Dabao to support mitochondrial research in skin health underscores our commitment to enhancing every day care for our consumers through innovative science and research,’’ Caroline Tillet, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer for Kenvue, said.
“Mitochondrial research is currently gaining increasing attention in the realm of skin health. As a national brand, Dabao has always been rooted in science and oriented towards the skincare needs of Chinese consumers. We keep a pulse on the latest global dermatological research and are dedicated to translating cutting-edge scientific breakthroughs into practical skincare solutions, ultimately safeguarding and improving skin health.”
Celebrating 40 Years of Protecting the Skin Health of the Chinese People
2025 marks the 40th anniversary of the Dabao brand. In 1985, the Beijing Sanlu Factory, an affiliate of the Beijing Civil Affairs Bureau, started the production of Dabao cosmetics, marking the beginning of a legendary era for the Chinese brand. From the 1990s to the early 21st century, Dabao became a household name with skin health in China.
