Newly released survey data has shed light on the often-overlooked role of pharmacists within the United Kingdom’s healthcare systems. Despite their significant contributions to primary care provision, a mere 22% of pharmacists feel valued by policymakers, in stark contrast to the 57%, who feel appreciated by consumers.
The survey, commissioned by consumer health company, Kenvue*, the makers of NICORETTE®, IMODIUM®, AVEENO®, LISTERINE® and CALPOL®, demonstrates how pharmacists alleviate pressure on national healthcare systems. Notably, 97% of pharmacists reported that consumers sought their advice because they could not get a GP appointment.
This data comes amidst widely recognised pressures facing the UK healthcare systems, which are felt even more acutely during the winter season when demand is at its highest. The survey also raises concerns about the increasing strain on pharmacists, with nearly 91% reporting a workload increase over the past year, and only 37% considering their current workload sustainable. Pharmacists’ primary concerns include the impact of their workload on wellbeing [62%], expanding clinical roles and services [50%], and staff recruitment and retention [48%].
Understandably, pharmacists say they currently spend most of their time advising on common ailments such as coughs, colds, pain, and allergies. However, the data suggests less time is spent on preventive measures, which could further alleviate pressure on the healthcare system, with just 7% focusing primarily on smoking cessation and only 4% on oral health.
That only 22% of pharmacists currently feel valued by policymakers, suggests the need for greater recognition and support for the profession within the healthcare system. Considering their vital frontline role and with the right support in place, pharmacists are however well-positioned to play an even greater role in delivering government health priorities - particularly amidst the ongoing shift to community care and a stronger focus on prevention. The survey reveals that 87% of pharmacists believe many health issues could be prevented through better self-care and 80% think improved consumer education could help.
Pharmacies have long been a cornerstone of local UK high streets, offering accessible walk-in services and a range of healthcare advice beyond medication. Their convenience and trusted relationships with customers make them an essential resource for immediate care and everyday health needs. More can now be done to leverage the profession’s trusted roles to meet consumer self-care needs, further alleviating pressure on healthcare systems.
Manoj Raghunandanan, Area Managing Director Northern Europe at Kenvue, commented on the findings: “At a time when the healthcare system is under significant pressure and securing a GP appointment is a challenge for many, this survey emphasises the vital role pharmacists continue to play in the UK’s healthcare landscape. But it also unfortunately underscores the urgent need for change in how pharmacists are valued and supported within the wider healthcare framework. There is a risk that their role and trusted community position is at times overlooked and taken for granted. At Kenvue, we are committed to continuing to recognise, support, and leverage their deep expertise – including through platforms like the Kenvue Pharmacist Leaders Forum** – so we can keep providing vital everyday care for those in our communities.”
Pharmacists are crucial in guiding consumers through the health decisions affecting them and their loved ones, influencing everything from self-care routines to over the counter medication when it is needed most. Kenvue remains committed to supporting pharmacists with the products they need to help consumers maintain their health and wellbeing. It is essential that the industry continues to recognise this invaluable role, using data driven insights to keep supporting and strengthening their position in healthcare delivery.
